Graphite Felt

Graphite felt is a flexible, high-temperature refractory material, typically made by subjecting carbon fibers to a special high-temperature graphitization process. It retains the excellent properties of bulk graphite, such as high purity, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, non-melting, low thermal conductivity, and dimensional stability at high temperatures. Additionally, it is characterized by being lightweight, elastic, and easily foldable or cut.

1.Soft Felt / Flexible Felt

Description:No binder between fibers, allowing bending and folding; easy to process.

Main Applications:Thermal insulation in vacuum/inert gas furnaces, battery electrode backings, filtration.

2.Rigid Felt
Description:Solidified into shape by adding a carbon-based binder or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD); stable structure and high mechanical strength.
Main Applications:Linings for large-sized vacuum furnaces, insulation layers requiring high mechanical strength.

1.PAN-based Graphite Felt
Description:Produced using Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers as the raw material.
Advantages:High strength, high purity, excellent chemical resistance, and oxidation resistance (relative to Rayon-based).
 
2.Rayon-based Graphite Felt
Description:Produced using Rayon fibers as the raw material.
Advantages:Produced using Rayon fibers as the raw material.

1. Thermal Insulation

Graphite felt is an ideal thermal insulation material for vacuum and inert gas furnaces.

Performance Characteristics: Extremely low thermal conductivity, high thermal stability, low shrinkage, low density, and high-temperature resistance (up to approximately $3000^\circ\text{C}$ in non-oxidizing atmospheres).
Application Fields:

Monocrystalline Silicon Smelting Furnaces: Used as thermal insulation material.
Vacuum and Inert Gas Furnaces: Used as furnace lining, heat shields, and insulation layers around heating elements.
Aerospace and Defense: Used in thermal protection systems.

 

2.Electrode Felt

Due to its high electrical conductivity, high surface area, and chemical resistance, graphite felt is widely used as an electrode material.

Performance Characteristics: Good electrical conductivity, porous structure provides a high surface area, and excellent chemical stability.
Application Fields:

Flow Batteries: Especially as the core electrode material for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB).
Fuel Cells: Used as Gas Diffusion Layers (GDL) or electrode components.
Electrochemical Processing: Used in various electrochemical reactions and chemical processing.

Important Notice

Inert or Vacuum Atmosphere (Insulation): When used as a high-temperature insulation material, graphite felt must be used under a vacuum or an inert gas (e.g., Nitrogen) atmosphere to prevent oxidation by oxygen in the air at high temperatures.

Electrochemical Activation (Electrode): When used as an electrode in flow batteries, it usually requires pre-treatment (activation) to enhance its specific surface area and electrochemical activity.

Temperature Limits: Although high-temperature resistant, the long-term operating temperature should not exceed the manufacturer's recommended maximum service temperature. Its maximum temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere is much lower than in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
